Daily Sun learnt that pandemonium broke out following his killing in Osogbo as motorists, Okada riders and passers-by descended on the policeman who pulled the trigger while his four other colleagues escaped from the scene of the incident. It was gathered that the septuagenarian simply identified as “Baba” died instantly as a result of the hot lead pumped into his head by the mobile policeman. There are conflicting versions of what led to the killing of the 70-year-old man at a checkpoint at Ota-Efun. While passers-by and occupants of the bus disclosed that he was shot dead by a drunk policeman because the driver refused to part with money. The Osun State Police Command said the policeman fired at the tyre of the bus after the driver hit his colleague at the check point when he refused to stop and in the process the bullet hit the 70-year-old man. Two others in the bus also received serious injuries. The corpse of the deceased whose full names could not be immediately ascertained has been deposited at the morgue of the State Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo by the police. It was gathered that the deceased was on his way to Ikirun after the solemnization of the wedding of his son when the bus was stopped by the policemen at the checkpoint. A passer-by disclosed that one of the policemen who was said to be drunk allegedly fired a shot at the bus when the driver was still engaged in discussion with another policeman. The scene of the incident was thrown into pandemonium as commuters and motorists scampered for safety. Apparently sensing danger, the other four policemen at the checkpoint immediately took to their heels for fear of mob attack but the killer cop was not lucky as he was caught and beaten to pulp by the angry mob. In the process of trying to escape from the scene of the incident, the four other policemen shot sporadically into the air to scare away people and this led to heavy traffic jam in the area. According to an Okada rider, the trigger-happy mobile policeman was spirited away from the checkpoint to the Mopol 39 headquarters located along Ring Road area of the state capital. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Clement Akinnola who confirmed the killing said Corporal Ogundewo Omoreayo attached to 39 PMF Osogbo was on duty at an Observation Point when the incident happened. Akinola disclosed that the driver of a Mercedes bus who did not want to stop, hit one of the policemen at the checkpoint and Corporal Omoreayo in an attempt to stop the bus shot at the back tyre, but the bullet missed the target and hit the man inside. The PPRO who could not give the names of the victim said Corporal Omoreayo is in a coma and at an undisclosed hospital receiving treatment. |
